Modern technology has made it possible to create digital twins of humans—virtual replicas that can predict human behavior and potential diseases, helping to solve health problems early.
A team of scientists from Duke University, Columbia University, Nebrija University, and the company CogniFit has succeeded in developing a new framework for addressing mental and cognitive health through what is known as “digital cognitive twins.” These are digital versions of individuals that, through artificial intelligence, can analyze massive amounts of data to help detect and treat diseases at an early stage.
According to the website Science Alert, it is expected that each person will eventually have a digital cognitive twin capable of predicting changes in memory or concentration levels and suggesting personalized brain-training activities before serious problems arise.
The key to this revolution lies in integrating the devices we already own—such as smartwatches, activity trackers, and sleep sensors—to provide a continuous flow of vital data. Information about heart rate, sleep quality, activity levels, and stress can feed into a digital twin that learns from these signals and adjusts its recommendations or cognitive training according to the person’s physical and mental condition at any given moment.
Artificial intelligence will act as a conductor, orchestrating all this data and integrating it into a system that not only responds to needs but anticipates them.
Digital twins are poised to become one of the greatest revolutions in medicine and cognitive science in this century. In just a few years, it may seem natural for each of us to have a digital cognitive twin that accompanies and cares for us.
